Manchester United 1980-81 Youth Team

The beginning of the 80's were a very bleak time for Manchester United fans. A last league title win was well over a decade ago, with no signs of that changing anytime soon. Dave Sexton was about to be sacked for his brand of defensive football that many fans had turned their back on and off the pitch Old Trafford was beginning to show signs of decay. Just when it seemed that there was no hope for the long-suffering supporters a new hero emerged from the youth team - Norman Whiteside!
United have always had a reputation for bringing through exciting young players and the fans have taken those homegrowns to their hearts more than any of the imported superstars. Norman Whiteside is one name that STILL gets fans of a certain age misty-eyed when recalling the great games, goals and thunderous tackles he put in whilst representing Manchester United.

Discovered by legend Bob Bishop, the same scout that had previously spotted George Best.

Norman made his debut for United aged only 16 and from then on every wonderful piece of play or fantastic goal scored would be greeted with a similar bit of age-related commentary;
"..still only 16"
"...just turned 17"
"not yet 18 but..."
Norman at his digs.

Big Ron Atkinson emerges from his office with ensuite sunbed.
