In the 1982/83 season, United reached both the League Cup final and the FA Cup final and Norman featured prominently all season. He managed 55 games and 14 goals. Quite a phenomenal statistic really, 17 years of age and playing so many games. However, it was the importance of the goals that set him on the legendary path that year.


Arsenal scrambled a goal to take the lead in a tight first half the 1983 FA Cup Semi Final at Villa Park. However, they could not hold back the United tide in the second half.


 Inspired by their captain, Bryan Robson, United were relentless. Robson himself equalised before the boy Whiteside who was still only 17, scored a superb winner to take United back to Wembley for the FA Cup Final.
